Frequently asked questions

The answers to the following questions are taken from the legal provisions governing fishing in public waters in the canton of Valais.

Who is authorized to fish?

Fishers over the age of 13 may fish unaccompanied. Under the age of 13, a child may fish with his or her own rod under the supervision of a licence holder, with the catch credited to the fishing licence holder. However, the fishing licence holder may only be accompanied by one child, unless he or she is the child’s father or legal guardian.

Do I need training or fishing course to fish ?

Anyone wishing to purchase a fishing license valid for more than one month must take a fishing skills certification course. FCVPA recommends that all anglers, including those purchasing short-term permits, take a fly-fishing course or a course for young and new anglers.

What does it take to fish ?

sAnyone wishing to fish in public waters must hold a valid fishing licence. For fishing licence valid for more than one month, a certificate of SaNa competence must be provided to obtain the fishing license.

What are the different types of fishing licence ?

A fundamental distinction is made between canal fishing license and licences for other waters. Canal licenses are sold by the FCVPA, all other permits by the canton of Valais. If you fish often, it’s best to buy an annual fishing license and join a fishing club.

If the fisher takes out both of the above annual fishing license, the restocking fee will only be charged once.

How to obtain discounted permits?

If you are a member of a section (fishing association) of the FCVPA, you do not have to pay the above-mentioned supplement for non-members of a section. To become a section member, you need to register with the section chairman and pay the annual fee (usually CHF 60). This saves you money and gives you the advantage of being able to take part in association events.
